This page explains the cookies Services Accessible sets and why. It works alongside our privacy policy, which covers data collection more broadly.
What a cookie is
A cookie is a small text file a site asks your browser to store, then reads back on later visits, usually to remember a setting or recognize repeat traffic.
What we don't set
We run no advertising network, no ad exchange pixels, no retargeting tags, and no cross-site tracking cookies. There are no affiliate links, no Amazon Associates links, no sponsored posts, no display ads, no paid placement, and no e-commerce on this site today, so none of those set cookies either. If we ever add any of these, we will disclose it here first — naming what's added, which cookies it sets, and how to opt out — before it goes live.
Cookies we do set
Two categories are actually in use.
1. Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 (measurement ID G-FLK4Y97NWG) to understand which guides get read and roughly how visitors arrive. The GA4 script does not load on page open — it loads only after your first interaction with the page (a click, a scroll, a tap) or after a 10-second delay, whichever comes first. Once loaded, it can set cookies that record pages viewed, approximate location (city/region level, not a precise address), and device type. Google, not us, controls how long that data is retained; see Google's privacy policy for their retention and processing terms. You can opt out of Google Analytics tracking across all sites that use it with Google's own Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
2. Strictly necessary
Cloudflare, which provides our hosting, CDN, security and site-wide Web Analytics beacon, may set cookies needed to route requests, mitigate abuse, and keep the site fast and available. These aren't optional in the way analytics cookies are — they're part of how any request to the site gets served safely.
Separately, our staff-only admin area at /admin/ sets a session cookie when an editor logs in, so the admin tools know who's signed in. That cookie is scoped strictly to /admin/, is httpOnly, and is never set for ordinary readers browsing guides, cities, or any public page.
Controlling cookies
Every modern browser lets you view, block, or delete cookies on a per-site or global basis, usually under Settings → Privacy. Blocking or clearing cookies does not break this site: every guide, image, and internal link works the same without them. The only thing you lose is our ability to see aggregate traffic patterns through analytics.
If your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal, we honor it: no analytics script is loaded for that visit.
Selling or sharing your data
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it with the contractors our call lines route to. Calling a number on this site connects you to an independent third-party provider directly by phone; we don't pass along cookie or analytics data as part of that call. See our disclaimer for how the call lines work.
